PPD

Today I went to talk to a counselor about my possibly having postpartum depression....and it turns out that I do.

For a while now, I have been having really tough days every once in a while, and yesterday it kind of scared me. I am not going to go into details, but I was having some scary thoughts and feelings regarding Kaylee and being a mom in general. Don't worry, I was NOT considering hurting her!!!

Robert was good enough to make the call to a counselor suggested by my doctor's office, and set up an appointment for this morning. I woke up today feeling 100% better (8 straight hours of sleep helped) and almost didn't go to the appointment. Now I am so glad that I did! Most of what the counselor said I already knew or had heard before, but what I hadn't realized is that I had all but 2 symptoms on a list of 10 or 12. Yesterday I even had a couple symptoms of postpartum anxiety....scary! Much of these are because I have not been taking enough time for myself, have not been getting enough sleep, or eating as well as I should.

Now I have a whole list of things to do to deal with this, and if that doesn't work, there is the possibility of medication help. I may possibly be posting on here when I have a really bad day, but please know that these posts will very honest. Robert and both sets of parents know that I am having some problems, so I have a good support system in place and don't feel like it will get out of hand.

I am SOOO glad that I went in to talk to someone about what I was feeling. Even if I did know more than I thought about PPD, it was nice to just talk through everything and have someone listen without caring what they thought. I am feeling much better today, and hope that just talking through this will help me a lot.

Before and After

Here is my very last belly picture while I was pregnant (I took it while I was in labor):

And here is a picture I took today!:

I am down almost 12 pounds already! It is SOOOOOOO nice to watch the scale go the other way!!

Birth Story

It all started Tuesday morning when Robert and I went to my doctor appointment at 8 in the morning. We went back, and the first thing that went wrong was that my blood pressure was high. For me 112/60+ is normal and mine came out at 140/79. They took it again and it was 132/66. They weren't too concerned. Then during the ultrasound J (my doctor) said that I had basically no fluid left in with Kaylee, and that my placenta had a lot of calcification in it (also a bad thing). So she said we were going in to have her today. She called the hospital and they said they wouldn't have a bed for us until 11. As I stood there talking to J, I swore I felt like I suddenly pee'd my pants. So I mentioned that I thought my water had just broken. J said to just go in as soon as we could.

We went home, got everything packed in the car, played with the dogs, puppy proofed the family room, and I took a shower. Then we went out to breakfast (something J had suggested) and while we were eating the hospital called to say they wouldn't have a room for us until noon. That was a good thing though because I had scheduled a car seat inspection at 11:30 that day. We went and found out that we actually put it in right!! It was just a little too lose, but other than that we did great. This whole time, I was having some slight contractions, but hadn't felt any more leaking of my water.

Once we got to the hospital we sat in the waiting room for an hour waiting for the room! So at 1 I got into my room, and around 1:45 J showed up to check my progress and to see if my water had actually broken. I was 3cm and about 65-70% effaced, and my water hadn't broken so she broke it. After that very painful exam the nurse started doing my IV. She was putting lidocaine in first to numb it, and it took her 3 tries. Each one felt like a bee sting! Finally she got it, and started my pitocin. My mom got there shortly after, and the contractions started.

I handled them as long as I felt like I could, but because I was on pitocin I was not allowed to walk around! That was because the baby needed to be constantly monitered. Around 4:00 I asked for a birthing ball to sit on to see if that would help, but by 4:30 it hadn't gotten there and I couldn't wait any longer. So I asked for the epidural. Luckily the Women's center had their own, so he was there in about 10 minutes. After the lidocaine for the IV's I was very worried about how much the epidural was going to sting. But it was no where near as painful!! In about 5 minutes I was feeling so much better. My only complaint the whole time with the epi. was that my right leg got SO numb that I couldn't move it, and it almost hurt.

Unfortunately, either my body was taking its time or the epi. slowed down my progress because I stayed at 3cm until around 9:30pm when J came back to check me again. Then she was very excited that I was finally 4cm and 90% effaced. Then I sat at 4 for a LONG time! I went to sleep around 11pm and tried to sleep most of the night. Around 1am the nurse came in and gave me an oxygen mask, turned off my pitocin, and rolled me onto my left side. Kaylee's heart rate kept dipping so they wanted to give her a break from the pitocin. At some point they had gotten special permission to turn it up one higher than the limit.

I went back to sleep, but at some point they came back in and turned my pitocin back on. That was when I noticed that I was starting to get feeling back into my legs and back. Then I started to be able to feel some tingling when the contractions came. At about 3pm I suddenly felt her head slide down into my pelvis and I suddenly was feeling a lot of pressure with every contraction. They still weren't too painful so I didn't push my button that would have given me another little dose of numbing meds. I wanted to wait until I was checked to see how far along I was. That 30-45 minutes was really really long, but I also liked being able to feel what was going on in my body.

My nurse brought in some tylonal and a bag of antibiotics because I was developing a fever (I found out later it was 102!). I didn't feel at all like I had a fever though. When I was checked I was 8cm and 100% effaced! Finally! I woke Robert up, and had him get ready for action because I could tell I was progressing VERY quickly. I pushed my button, and nothing really happened. My right leg got a bit numb but nothing else. So I pushed it again with the same result.....a little more numb but not as much as I wanted. At 4:00 the nurse came back and I told her that I was feeling some major pressure. She checked me for about 2 seconds and said "well that is because you are going to have a baby in a minute!!!" She turned on some lights and had me do a test push. It was going to be a few test pushes, but she stopped me after one, and said that she was going to call my doctor.

That is when I realized that I needed to be more numb if I didn't want to feel everything that was about to happen. I pushed the button a third time, and then a fourth for good measure. That got me just numb enough. I couldn't get rid of the pressure (typical with epidurals) but the contractions weren't painful anymore. When my nurse came back in she said that we were going to let me sit and progress some more on my own until the nurse shift change at 5......a whole hour away. It was a very uncomfortable hour.

Around 5 I started feeling the fever, which had gone up, and I mentally and emotionally started to break down. It took the new nurses (a regular and a nurse in training) FOREVER to get me ready to push, and suddenly my IV stopped working. It was back flowing a little, and nothing was getting into me. They fiddled with it, and I started tearing up because I was so afraid they were going to have to try to give me a new one. I just couldn't handle it. I was in some pretty serious pain from the pressure, and didn't want more pain. Then they decided to flush it (I think) and holy crap that hurt! That got me crying more, and I started to lose it. I just generally felt like crap. Robert got me a cold cloth for my head, but it was doing little to make me feel better. The nurses had me practice push through one contraction (so 3 pushes) and had me stop so the doctor could get there. I remember thinking "what? you haven't called her yet?" I guess they just meant they needed to let her know I was ready to push for real. This was all around 5:30. I got a hold of myself so that I would be able to breathe effectivly when it was time to push.

Finally J got there, and they put my legs up in stirrups. That was the most painful part of the whole labor and delivery. It made the pain from the pressure 1 million times worse so that it hurt all the time rather than just with the contractions. Once she was all ready I pushed through another contraction, and then had to SIT THERE and wait until the next one came. I swear that 2 minutes was the longest ever. On the next contraction, I pushed twice and her head came out which was the greatest feeling in the world because all the pressure pain went away. Her crowning was no where near as painful as I thought it was going to be. Then one little half push and out she came! I watched the whole time from when her head came out until she was out.

This is where things get fuzzy. She was placed on my chest and I remember being suprised by how blue she was, and how slimy! There was nothing wrong with her, she just had a bit of a cone head from being in my pelvis so long. I watched J clamp her cord, and Robert got to cut it. Her cord was VERY thin and whimpy looking. Then she was taken to be weighed and cleaned off. Until that point she hadn't cried at all! Because of the fever I was feeling very drunk and out of it so I am not sure I noticed her first cry. She was completely healthy, and scored 8 and 9 on her apgars. She also had a fever but just because I did. I didn't cry when she came out, I think because I was not "there" enough mentally to feel the emotions. As I was being stiched up, the rest of my epidural wore of and I felt the last couple pokes of the needle down there. I didn't get an epesiodomy but I did get a little 1st degree tear.

So, there you have it! It was one of the best experiences of my life, and I am glad it happened the way it did. I felt just enough of the delivery part to know that I can do it again. I really wish the fever hadn't happened because I would have liked to be more aware and awake when she came out. Jenetta, I can't wait for you to have little Evelyn! I hope your labor and delivery goes smoothly!

Things to do

Realizing that I have just over a week to go into labor on my own has made me determined to do everything in my power to have Kaylee here before my induction date. I am not against induction, but I didn't realize how much I wanted to go naturally until my doctor gave me an ultimatum!

So here is my "to do" list for making myself go into labor:
  1. Walk the dogs EVERY SINGLE DAY!!
  2. A few good "rolls in the hay" with Robert
  3. Eating lots of pineapple (it is supposed to soften the cervix)
  4. Getting my membranes stripped (separating the amniotic sack from the uterine walls)
  5. Walking around the mall every day after membranes are stripped
  6. Climbing some flights of stairs
  7. Bouncing on the fitness ball as much as physically possible
  8. Eating a few spicy spicy meals
  9. Getting a acupressure pedicure from a lady in my ward
  10. Caster oil (last resort in a week if I don't go before then)
Any more suggestions?

July 28th

That is the day Kaylee will be here unless she decides to come out earlier.

I once again was told that there was no change in my cervix at my appointment today. My doctor really doesn't want me going more than a week overdue, so she is putting me down for an induction on the 28th. I still really want to go natural, and will be disappointing if she doesn't come by the induction date, but I am not against being induced.

I am going to start doing everything I can to try to induce myself though! Kaylee please come out by yourself!!

Only one to go!

Yay for week 39!! I am down to 7 days until my due date! I have had very mixed emotions this week ranging from being so uncomfortable that I just want her out, to still absolutely loving being pregnant. I am really encouraged that I haven't continued to pack on the pounds. I actually lost a few ounces this week. Maybe I will stay under 200!

My doctor's appointment was pretty much the same as last week. Kaylee is 6 lbs 11 oz (as of Thursday). The best part was that I had lost almost two pounds sense my last appointment! It was the first time the scale had gone down in over a month, and I almost did a little happy dance right there at the scale. I am still at 1 centimeter, so my doctor doesn't seem to think Kaylee is going to be coming any time soon. But hopefully I am a little closer on Friday when I go in again. As it is my birthday tomorrow, I am REALLY hoping Kaylee stays put for the next couple days. I don't want to share a birthday with any of my children.....strange I know, but that is how I feel.

Kaylee has had the hiccups several times a day almost every day this week. I don't know what is causing it, but it is getting a little annoying. Here are the stats for this week:
  • Weight: 192.2
  • Waist: 46"
  • Bra size: Maternity Large...or 36 F
  • Sleeping Schedule: Go to Bed @ 9:30-10:30pm and wake up @ 7:30-8:00am + 2 hour nap 4 days
  • Exercise Schedule: 60 minute walk with the dogs 2 days, Exercise ball 4 days, 2 mile walk on treadmill 1 day

Week 38

I cannot believe I am 38 weeks pregnant! I am still feeling for the most part good. Some days are harder than others, but I really can't complain. My biggest struggle now are my hands, they HURT! Sometimes I can barely open doors because griping the door nob hard enough to turn it almost kills me. Robert has been opening most jars and bottles for me, and sometimes has to close them too.

I took the dogs on a hike this week, and I was very much regretting it the rest of the day. I was in pain, and stiff for the rest of the day, and was contracting a little bit. Luckily I have been sleeping really well the last few days, and taking a nap almost every day. Friday after the hike I slept a good 10 hours including a 2 hour nap!

My next appointment is on Thursday, and I am hoping Kaylee hasn't grown too much. Stay small little girl! Here are my stats for the week:
  • Weight: 192.4
  • Waist: 45"
  • Bra size: Maternity Large...or 36 F
  • Sleeping Schedule: Go to Bed @ 9:30-10:30pm and wake up @ 6:30-8:00am + 2 hour nap 5 days
  • Exercise Schedule: 60 minute walk with the dogs 2-3 days, Exercise ball 4 days, 90 minute hike with the dogs 1 day
I failed to even take a picture last week, let alone post one, so here are a few this week.

I officially have stretch marks on my belly, so I thought I would share with everyone! Lol, no, I am not excited that I have them.....quite the opposite.

These ones itch like crazy all the time!

Full Term!

Today little Kaylee is considered "Full Term". Today is also the first day of the last 3 weeks of this pregnancy. THREE WEEKS!!! I can't believe I only have three weeks left....well probably 3 weeks and a few days depending on how long after the due date Kaylee makes her appearance. I am already planning to be past my due date, so if she comes early or on time great! And if not, I will have already prepared for it.

I have been pretty sore and tired this week, but the last few days I have been sleeping really well! I slept for a whole 10 1/2 hours (minus 5-6 bathroom breaks) the other night. I went to sleep on the couch just after 8 and woke up in the morning at 6:30! It was wonderful, and I took a nap that day! I have been trying my hardest to eat healthy, but the pounds keep coming. I just keep reminding myself that I can start losing it in just over 3 weeks. That is one of the most exciting parts of having Kaylee....I can finally watch the scale go back the other way.

The doctor's appointments are a week apart now, and I have had two sense last Tuesday......so not a full week apart, but close. I am dilated to 1cm, but that is about it. Kaylee is a few ounces over 6 lbs and I am hoping her growth slows down until delivery. I really don't want a huge baby lol! I can't wait to meet her and be her mommy! Anyways, here are the stats for this week:

  • Weight: 190.4
  • Waist: 45"
  • Bra size: Maternity Large...or 36 F
  • Sleeping Schedule: Go to Bed @ 8:30-10:00pm and wake up @ 6:30-9:00am
  • Exercise Schedule: 60 minute walk with the dogs 2-3 days, Exercise ball 2 days, 90 minute hike with the dogs 1 day

Week 36

Well this is the start of the last month of this pregnancy! I can't believe it, and the due date is so close! As of right now, I am having some Braxton Hicks contractions just about every 3 or so minutes. They don't hurt, and at first I thought it was Kaylee moving.....but realized that the "movements" were coming in a pattern. Very interesting and exciting!

I have another doctor's appointment tomorrow, and another one on Monday! I think after that they will be every week until she gets here.

  • Weight: 187.9
  • Waist: 45"
  • Bra size: Maternity Large...or 36 F
  • Sleeping Schedule: Go to Bed @ 9:00-11:30pm and wake up @ 7:30-8:30am
  • Exercise Schedule: 60 minute walk with the dogs 2-3 days, Exercise ball 2 days

It is SO close!

Yep, it is week 35! Only 5 to go!!

This last week was pretty uncomfortable, and painful for me. Now that Kaylee has officially turned head-down, I am in a lot more pain than I was before. Sometimes it is shooting pain so bad it stops me in my tracks and makes my eyes water. The pain is just from her head resting on and stretching out muscles, ligaments, and tendons that were left alone until now. I am very glad she is head down though, and with all the walking I do (which sometimes causes braxton hicks now) I am hoping I will at least not go over my due date.

At our doctor's appointment Kaylee weighed in at 5 lbs! I am hoping she doesn't gain the 1/2-1 lb per week some books say they gain from here on. That would make her at the least 7.5 lbs by delivery! That isn't too bad, but I was hoping for a little baby like I was.....under 7 lbs. Her head isn't big though which is good.

I am starting to get worried about delivery being so close. I know it has to happen for her to get here, but I would rather just skip it. Lol, I don't think that is an option though.

My foot is feeling much better this week, and my doctor said it is probably just a bone bruise. Sense my feet are spreading out bone bruises are easier to get, and take weeks to heal.....especially when I refuse to rest.

  • Weight: 185.8
  • Waist: 44....how I lost 3/4 of an inch is beyond me!I definitely feel bigger!
  • Bra size: Maternity Large...or 36 F
  • Sleeping Schedule: Go to Bed @ 9:00-11:30pm and wake up @ 6:30-7:30am
  • Exercise Schedule: 60 minute walk with the dogs 3-4 days, Exercise ball 3 days

Week 34!

I was really bad this week. I threw all healthy eating out the window, and ate basically whatever I wanted all week. That included a whole bunch of root beer floats (I just can't get enough of them!), pizza, doughnuts, and just lots of food in general. Along with that, I still am not able to do as much with the dogs as I used to, thanks to my foot. So that explains my weight gain for the week....though now that I know just how much I gained, this coming week will be healthier with more exercise.

I think, but am not quite sure, I had a couple of braxton hicks contractions this week! That or Kaylee was just moving really strangely and I don't know what I am talking about. It basically felt like something was pulling the sides of the top of my stomach in towards my spine....so I don't know how that would be her moving. It didn't hurt at all, but was definitly noticable.

We have another doctor's appointment tomorrow, and I am SO hoping that Kaylee has both turned head-down and is at an angle where we can get a picture of her! We haven't gotten any sense the 3D ultrasound at 21 weeks :( I have been trying to get a video of my belly when she is moving a lot, but being her shy little self, she stops moving as soon as the camera comes out. I am determined to get one though!
  • Weight: 183.6 - so00 it was only 2 pounds, but it still seems like too much for me! I am officially at 30 lbs of weight gain for this pregnancy. And I have gained almost 20 lbs in the past 10 weeks!
  • Waist: 44 3/4"
  • Bra size: Maternity Large...or 36 F
  • Sleeping Schedule: Go to Bed @10:00-10:30pm and wake up @ 6:30-8:00am
  • Exercise Schedule: 60 minute walk with the dogs 3 days, Exercise ball 3 days, 90 minute hike with the dogs 1 day.

Yet another one down

Week 33!

This week has been pretty difficult for me because of my sore heel. I couldn't get out hardly at all, even to do needed things like grocery shopping. So basically I was confined to a sitting or laying down position. Some days I just took enough pain killers to be able to walk around, and I went out for my sanity's sake.

Pregnancy wise, this week was pretty much the same as the last. I think Kaylee has turned head down, because the muscles down there are feeling a little strained. I am still loving being pregnant, but I really want to get back to my own self, and move on to being a mom.

  • Weight: 181.4
  • Waist: 44"
  • Bra size: Maternity Large...or 36 F
  • Sleeping Schedule: Go to Bed @ 9:00-10:30pm and wake up @ 7:00-8:00am
  • Exercise Schedule: 60 minute walk with the dogs 1 day, Exercise ball 3 days - thanks foot for my lack of exercise!

I decided to make up for not posting my belly picture yesterday by posting 5 of them today!

32 Weeks!

This week seemed to go on forever, but I think part of that was due to the long weekend. I have been more comfortable heat wise, but have been getting some very mild heart burn most of the week. Last night was the most uncomfortable so far, so I may need to get some medicine just in case it gets worse. Kaylee has been slightly less active this week, but that is almost a good thing because she was making me quite uncomfortable.

For almost 4 days now my feet have been really sore, almost bruised feeling. Particularly my right heel which is so painful, it has me walking on the ball of that foot rather than the whole thing. It throbs when I am not walking on it, and on Saturday night and most of Sunday I was taking Tylenol just to survive. I have been staying off my feet as much as possible, but it isn't really getting any better so I may be going in to the doctor.

Last week's weight was accurate, unfortunately, so I have concentrated on eating healthier foods this week, and I guess one of those 5 pounds wasn't needed so it went away. My doctor hasn't said anything about my weight though so I guess I am doing fine.

I only have 3 doctor's appointments left!! One in four weeks, then one in two weeks after that, and the last one a week after that. It just amazes me that I am so close to having little Kaylee!

  • Weight: 179.2
  • Waist: 43 1/2"
  • Bra size: Maternity Large...or 36 F
  • Sleeping Schedule: Go to Bed @ 9:00-11:30pm and wake up @ 7:00-8:00am
  • Exercise Schedule: 60 minute walk with the dogs 3 days, 90 minute hike with the dogs 1 day, exercise ball 3 days

I didn't get around to taking a picture for the week, but I promise I will tomorrow.

Week 31....

This week has been good, but a little tough. I have started to notice my hands getting swollen when I get too hot, and the last two days the swelling hasn't gone down much during the night. I haven't noticed my feet being swollen, but I am sure they are a little. Sadly I haven't been able to really wear my wedding ring for almost 4 days now:( My spare ring is unfortunately the same size so it doesn't fit either! Other than that, I have had a good week!

One really great thing we found out this week is that our insurance covers 90% of a breast pump purchase! We would have to pay all of it up front, but would be reimbursed for most of it. This means I can buy the best pump we can find, new, and not have to worry about the cost! We were very excited about it. They also cover IUD's for birth control 100% up to like $350! I really didn't want to go back to any other type of pills or chemical control, but I had been worried about the cost of an IUD. Not anymore though! Our insurance is wonderful!

We found out on Friday that Kaylee is going to have a little girl cousin in September! Jenetta and James found out that they are also expecting a girl, which will be so much fun! I already can't wait for the road trip out to see them when she has her. My mom and I are going to head out as soon as she is in labor, so we will get there soon after their little "Evelyn (Evie) Marie" is born.

I still can't believe how close I am to having a child! It hits me every once in a while that in just over 2 months Robert and I will be responsible for the life of another human being!
  • Weight: 180.4 - I don't think this is accurate. At least I really hope I didn't gain 5 pounds in one week! I think a lot of it is water retention weight because it has been really hot in our house the last couple days. I will probably update this weight when I go to the doctor tomorrow....or I will post ranting about stupid weight gain.
  • Waist: 43 1/2"
  • Bra size: Maternity Large...or 36 F
  • Sleeping Schedule: Go to Bed @ 9:00-10:30pm and wake up @ 7:00-8:00am
  • Exercise Schedule: 60 minute walk with the dogs 3 days, 90 minute hike with the dogs 1 day

My belly is getting HUGE! I can't even imagine what it will look like in 2 months!

Belly Comparing!

Jenetta was here in Utah visiting during my sister's wedding, and we took this picture comparing our baby bellies:
Jenetta was just short of 20 weeks and I was just short of 30 weeks

I'm in my 30s!!!!

Week 30!

Only 10 weeks until my due date! I can't believe it, and at the same time, it can't get here soon enough. Nothing much happend this week, or if it did I was too busy to notice!
  • Weight: 175.6
  • Waist: 42 1/2"
  • Bra size: Maternity Large...or 36 F
  • Sleeping Schedule: Go to Bed @ 9:00-12:00pm and wake up @ 7:00-8:00am
  • Exercise Schedule: 60 minute walk with the dogs 1 days, 15-30 minute walk with dogs, 3 days, 90 minute hike with the dogs 1 day. I had such a busy week that I count all of it as exercise and don't feel bad for the lack of "real" exercise.

This is my only pre-pregnancy shirt that works as a maternity shirt. Hopefully it works as a post-pregnancy shirt after this!

There was a request for a picture with my face in it. So after 15 pictures where I look super retarded, here is the only one I was kind of happy with......and it is basically a really good shot of my camera with me in the background! Actually, after looking at the other pictures, they are all like that!

Week 29

Yet another week has passed, and this one brought some uncomfortable moments. Church on Sunday was VERY uncomfortable because for some reason my lungs were getting squished to the point that it was hard to breathe. Other than that, the week has mostly been filled with boredom due to the rain that wont let up. Kaylee has been moving a lot lately, and not all of it is comfortable lol. The best thing this week was that she has started to react to pokes to my belly. I can push on a spot where she has been kicking and she will kick where I pushed. It is amazing!

  • Weight: 174.4

  • Waist: 42"

  • Bra size: Maternity Large...or 36 F

  • Sleeping Schedule: Go to Bed @ 9:00-12:00pm and wake up @ 6:00-8:00am

I am VERY excited that I get to see my sister Jenetta today!! She is coming into town for my little sister's wedding on Thursday. It will be so fun to see my pregnant sister! She is about 10 weeks behind me....so between 18 and 19 weeks. They don't know what theirs is yet but are finding out next week. I am excited for her and her husband!
